- Antithetical Proverbs

- An antithetical proverb presents a
- thought in the first line, then follows with
- the negative of that thought in the second
- line. Many times the theme of an antithetical
- proverb follows this format: "If you do this
- and that, you will be blessed; but if you
- don't, this will happen." The second line
- emphasizes the first. You will always find
- the word "but" somewhere in an antithetical
- proverb. Usually it will be found between the
- first and second lines.

- Examples of Antithetical Proverbs

- "Say not thou, I will recompense evil;
- but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee"
- (Proverbs 20:22).

- "The king's wrath is as the roaring of a
- lion; but his favour is as dew upon the
- grass" (Proverbs 19:12).

- "He that covereth a transgression
- seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter
- separateth very friends" (Proverbs 17:9).
